Debate and Document

Adding the adjustable nature of the space, the furniture too has to be able to move and adapt to the function and the way people want to form and debate in the space. So the pieces focused on moveability over comfort to encourage shorter stays in the space that focus on not being overwhelmed by what could be an overpowering atmosphere as many of us are not taught that casual debate is of value and should be practised, especially as a form of education and learning.

Level 2 is a floor on which people are intended to have more lively interactions, debating with the space and each other in an effort to continue the environment of knowledge sharing and learning brought on by the impacts of COVID. It consists of mainly bespoke elements supported by loose furniture that allows the space to adapt and move with those inhabiting it, to support learning and debate in a way that makes sense and is comfortable for them. Allowing people to adjust to this new public space for learning and begin to consider what interiors that host informal education can look and feel like.

Debate with space to encourage healthy debate as a form of learning.
It works to use repetitive forms to create a space intended to be controlled and distorted by the users present on any one day, reset to the original layout each night to allow the process to happen all over again. Present only within the new floor plates these spaces of debate are proposed as completely new ideas intended for growth and protection within the existing shell of history.

The detailing in the space acts to better articulate the use, through communicating the audience's ability to play with the space, and make clear the separation of these floors of debate from the existing floors and space of the Boiler House. This floor is not alive without people, they add the warmth, movement and function to the space through their inhabitation and engagement with it.

Detailing of the internal mechanisms of the poles required layering various elements to ensure that the pole would remain as stable as possible while still functioning as an autonomous element within the floor.
It uses multiple castor wheels locked to a track that limits movement on a single line coupled with the internal ring which allows individually adjusted metal wires to spin as the poles move. Spiralling around the upper ball until they reach their limit. Through this limitied movement the accessiblity of the space is ensured as walkways are enforced by these limits. The exposure of the simple mechanical system of the poles is intended to create curisoity in the space, leading to interaction.

The scale of the debate space required a light that would not be dwarfed and so through designing this custom light fixture it could be better suited to the scale of the ceiling and align to Level 2 to create interest from this quiet study type space.
The intention of this light feature is to create what seems to be a mess of forms but is actually a series of carefully placed rings that require viewing from multiple angles to see the whole picture. It acts within the space to further speak to the nature of debate and encourage the viewing of debates from multiple angles to truly understand their depth.
